Proposal to Jackson County
Grocery stores currently have no viable option but to throw away food nearing its expiration date, and farms themselves are unable to sell “unsightly” produce due to FDA regulations. The combined food waste from the Commercial and Agricultural sectors account for more than half of all food waste in America. Despite opposition from business owners’, when required food donation by supermarkets and markets for unsightly produce were enacted in France, food waste by stores went down to 11% of the total food waste without any negative effects for the retailers.
I propose enactment of legislation that requires grocery stores over 15000 square feet to sign donation contracts with charities to distribute food fit for consumption that would otherwise be thrown out and requires farms to sign donation contracts with charities to distribute food fit for consumption that would not be sold due to FDA regulations.
The benefits of enacting this legislation would both increase food security and reduce food waste in Jackson County. If not enacted, food will continue to be wasted commercially in Jackson County and food banks will struggle to keep up with increased demand.
